Heading to a party? Make sure you avoid these foods otherwise you will regret it later.
1. Coleslaw
Unless your coleslaw contains no dressing, then you are sporting a very expensive pair of rose-tinted glasses, health-wise. A serving of coleslaw has about 250 calories and 20g of fat, thanks to a generous amount of mayonnaise.
2. Eggnog
A single cup of this holiday treat has about 300 calories, and alcohol increases the calories. Made from eggs, milk and sugar, it is simply bad news to your cholesterol levels and arteries.
3. Crackers and Cheese
This is one snack you should definitely give a wide berth. Think about it, all you are eating is processed carbohydrates and a lot of fat.
4. Cranberry Sauce
Though made from cranberries, it requires a lot of sugar to sweeten it, which means more calories and highly fluctuating sugar levels for you. There is nothing sweet about both.
5. Pecan Pie
While nuts are a great source of good fats and protein, when they form a dessert with other ingredients such as butter and sugar, what you get is a high calorie pie. A slice of pecan pie has around 520 calories and 25g of fat.
6. Pot Roast
If you are a lover of pot roast, hearing that you should be avoiding the tantalizing slice of beef may not sit very well with you; at least until you learn that you will be doing yourself a favour. Pass up on the gravy and entrée if the temptation is too great.
7. Meatballs
While some view them as an easier way to determine portion sizes, eating more than one of this ground beef delicacies is not a very good idea. Your heart will definitely not thank you for it.
8. Cheese Whiz
It has all the bad properties of cheese such as high calories and none of the nutritional ones.
9. Packaged Sandwiches
Containing around 400 calories, it is better to eat home-made sandwiches. Most also have mayonnaise or cheese, which means you are loading your body with saturated fats too.
10. Baked Brie
Two ounces of baked brie cheese contain about 200 calories and 16g of fat. Try a healthier alternative instead.
11. Fries
Everyone who has done any research on nutrition knows that fries/ chips are not a healthy food option. Even when labeled trans-fat free, they are still not a good choice for anyone who is health-conscious.
12. Pizza
While pizza can be healthy, a normal pizza is high in calories and fat, and is made of processed flour. Toppings such as a lot cheese do not make it any healthier.
13. Deep-Fried Chicken
Though chicken is white meat and thus a good source of protein, deep-fried chicken is bad news due to high fat content.
14. Muffins and Cupcakes
Like most cakes and high sugar desserts, muffins and cupcakes are high on calories and if butter is an ingredient, fats too. The high sugar content takes your blood sugar levels on a rollercoaster ride, and the low after a sugar high leaves you yearning for more.
